Larry Joel Karsten, 57, of Ely passed away as a result of a tragic car accident on Thursday, March 11, 2010.
He was born in Winona, Minn., on Oct. 29, 1952, and moved to Two Harbors with his family where he lived for eight years, after which they moved to Ely where he spent most of his adult life. He graduated from Ely Memorial High School in 1970. On Sept. 18, 1978, he married the love of his life, Nancy (Kainz).
Larry was a heavy equipment operator and truck driver in Elko, Nev., and became a member of the Elko Nev. Rock Climbing Rescue Squad. He was a heavy equipment operator at Northshore Mining in Babbitt, where he retired. He enjoyed spending time with this wife Nancy and shared their love of music, books, and their many animals.
Larry is survived by his sister Laurie (Orren) Young of Ely; three nieces, Kristy (Christopher) Marks of Shafer, Minn., Linda (Eric) Ludwig and Jennifer (Andy) Seliskar, bothl of Ely; four great-nieces, Alexis, Madison, Katelyn and Katrina; and two great-nephews, Brian and Collen.
Larry was preceded in death by his wife of 27 years, Nancy (Kainz) Karsten in 2005; and his parents Leo Karsten and Lorraine Lampi.
Memorial services will be held at the Kerntz Funeral Home in Ely at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.
