James M. Motley, 83, of Eveleth died suddenly Wednesday, July 26, 2006, at the Virginia Regional Medical Center.
He was born Dec. 25, 1922, in Atlas, Ill., to Lewis and Elizabeth (Dickson) Motley. James served in the Navy during World War II and was married to Mary Zaletel on July 31, 1954, in Biwabik. He worked construction for Foley Brothers, later working for Eveleth Taconite as a lab analyst. He retired in 1985. James was a proud member of United Steelworkers of America Local 6860.
He is survived by his wife, Mary; their children, Louis (Marcia) Motley and John (Debbie) Motley, both of Eveleth, Mary (Bill) Berg of Antigo, Wis., Linda (Brad) Surla of Eveleth, Janet (Mike) Swanson of Chisholm and Ron (Cherie) Motley of St. Paul, Minn.; grandchildren, Rachael Motley, Elizabeth Motley, Max Motley, Katie Motley, Kathy (Randy) Kloes, Michelle (Jason) Hetto, Bill (Suzanne) Berg, Bob Berg, Scott Surla and Mikey Swanson; great-grandchildren, Nikki and Brett Kloes and Kristin, Katelyn, Megan and Sara Hetto; a brother, Henry (Loretta) Motley, of New Salem, Ill.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; seven brothers; two sisters; two siblings in infancy; and a grandson, Zachary Motley.
