Recently, a representative from the United Way of Northeastern Minnesota visited my place of employment, American Bank in Nashwauk, as part of their 2012 campaign. During her presentation, she shared information with us regarding their Buddy Backpack program, which provides a backpack filled with nonperishable, kid-friendly, nutritious food to kids who would otherwise go hungry over the weekends. Until this visit, I was unaware of the high numbers of children experiencing hunger right here on the Iron Range.

In addition to food, these kids are lacking other everyday necessities as well, such as socks, underwear and toiletry items. The thought of a child in our area going to school without proper socks and underwear or being able to keep themselves clean is devastating.

Upon learning of these needs, I decided to gather some of my co-workers to conduct a drive within our bank branches to collect socks, soap, shampoo, toothpaste, deodorant, etc. as well as monetary donations for the Buddy Backpack program. If readers are interested in donating items or funds, they can bring them into any American Bank location. We will ensure that these donations are used to care for kids in the Buddy Backpack program.

I believe that once people within our communities become aware of this issue that they will gladly donate and help us to collect personal needs items and raise funds for these kids. I plan to do everything in my power to help children in need on the Iron Range.

Thank you for your time.

Molly Healy
