VIRGINIA — A remake of a George Gershwin classic takes to the stage in late July and early August when Mesabi Musical Theatre presents “Crazy for You” starring more than 40 local actors.
“Crazy for You” will be presented at the Mesabi Range College theater in Virginia, opening at 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 27, with shows continuing on Thursday and Friday nights for two weeks, along with two Sunday matinees at 2 p.m. The final performance will be at 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 7.
“We’re excited about it,” said producer Jack Gritzmacher in a phone interview. “We’re building off the successful productions of ‘Footloose’ and ‘Chicago’.” Tickets are on sale now at www.mesabimusicaltheatre.com. Prices are $17 for preferred seating, $15 for adults, and $13 for students or senior citizens.
The Gershwin production of “Girl Crazy” opened on New York City’s Broadway in the 1930s and later became a movie starring Mickey Rooney. It has many of the hit Gershwin songs — “I Can’t Be Bothered Now,” “Bidin’ My Time,” “I Got Rhythm,” “Naughty Baby,” “They Can’t Take That Away from Me,” “But Not for Me,” “Nice Work if You Can Get It,” “Embraceable You” and “Someone to Watch Over Me.”

“Crazy for You” stars Christian Van Orsdel as Bobby Child and Jennifer Bruemmer as Polly Baker, the postmistress of Deadrock, Nev. Ethan Allen takes on the role of Broadway producer Bela Zangler, and Baker Felix portrays Lank Hawkins, a Nevada saloon proprietor.
The cast also features Linda Currie as Mrs. Lottie Child, Bobby’s business-oriented and controlling mother, and Tom Moe as Everett Baker, Polly’s father. Rounding out the cast is Carrie Manner as New York City debutante Irene Roth, with Megan Wallis and Kennedy Niska as English tourists Patricia and Eugene Fodor.
The creative team includes director John Renzaglia, musical director Ann Marie Lubovich, choreographer Kasie Saumer and producer Gritzmacher. Also on the creative team are technical director Jeremy Liimatta, costume designer Susan Muermann Nelson and lighting designer Dustin Davidson.
The Cowboy Chorus includes Alex Adams-Ranta, Scott Carlson, Jake Weston, Shane Johnson, Tony Malich and Alex Jensen. The Cowboy Trio is Chris Chad, Sam Saari and Dominick Olivanti.
The Follies girls and chorus performers are Kasie Saumer, Josie Moe, Briona Currie, Halina Mojkowski, Juliana Pauling, Jenna Fossell, Grace Brunfelt and Kayla Reimer. The ensemble chorus includes Meghan Carlson, Alexa Ismil, Lori Ismil, Angela Reimer, Dieu Do, Taylor Wilson, Siri Stocke, Sophia Nemec and Brennan Muhich.
MMT is a regional, non-profit organization whose mission is to involve community members in summer theatre and to bring the best of Broadway to the Iron Range.
