Miners project meets the public

More than 60 people attended Thursday night's public meeting to hear proposals to rebuild or replace the Miners Memorial Building.=

VIRGINIA — Election results are in for ballot measures across in Virginia.

The city’s Miners Memorial renovation, reconstruction, expansion and improvement passed, and he Virginia school district’s revenue referendum passed.

The Virginia city question was given to all city residents. This question concerns the future of the Miners Memorial complex. There were five precincts in this contest.

The measure passed with 2,393 yes votes (68.84 percent) and 1,083 no votes (31.16 percent).

The wording appeared as follows:

City Question 1 (Virginia)

Miners Memorial Arena Recreation Complex and Convention Center Renovation, Reconstruction, Expansion, and Improvement

“Shall the Virginia City Council seek special legislative authorization to impose by Ordinance a sales and use tax of 1.0 percent for a period of up to 20 years for the purpose of paying all or part of the of the capital and administrative/financing costs of renovation, reconstruction, expansion, and improvement of the Miners Memorial Recreation Complex and Convention Center?”

Levy passes

The school district question was given to all who fall within their school district boundaries. The question focused on increasing property tax. There were ten precincts in this contest.

The measure passed with 2,690 yes votes (60.04 percent) and 1,790 no votes (39.96 percent).

Approval of School District Referendum Revenue Authorization

“The board of lndependent School District No. 706 (Virginia), Minnesota has proposed to increase the School District’s general education revenue by $555 per pupil, subject to an annual increase at the rate of inflation. The proposed referendum revenue authorization would be first levied in 2019 for taxes payable in 2020 and applicable for seven (7) years unless otherwise revoked or reduced as provided by law. Shall the increase in the general education revenue proposed by the board of Independent School District No. 706 (Virginia), Minnesota be approved? BY VOTING “YES” ON THIS BALLOT QUESTION, YOU ARE VOTING FOR A PROPERTY TAX INCREASE.”
