‘Chicago!’: Mesabi Theatre performance June 26-29

The cast of Mesabi Musical Theatre's production of Chicago performs the opening dance during a recent rehearsal at the Mesabi Range College. The show runs from June 19-22 and from June 26-29.

VIRGINIA — Mesabi Musical Theatre, now in its eighth year, will present “Chicago” Thursday through Sunday and again June 26-29 at Mesabi Range College auditorium. Shows run at 7 p.m. Thursday-Saturday and at 4 p.m. Sunday.

“Chicago,” directed by Jack Gritzmacher, English, speech and drama instructor in the Eveleth-Gilbert Schools, is a “tale of crime and punishment,” Gritzmacher said in an email. “It takes audiences on a jazzy trip to the Windy City during the height of Prohibition. When infamy goes to their heads, two murderesses fight for the attention of the sensationalist media, with assistance from a smooth-talking attorney and a crooked prison matron.” The book upon which “Chicago” is based was written by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, with music by Ebb and John Kander. “Chicago” debuted on Broadway in 1975, has been revived several times and was adapted into a 2002 Miramax film which won the 2002 Academy Award for Best Picture. The first production of Mesabi Musical Theatre was “Guys and Dolls” at Eveleth-Gilbert High School in 2002 starring high school actors. Now cast members of all ages participate.

The cast members and their parts are the following: Julie Jacobsma of Cloquet as Velma Kelly, Jennifer Bruemmer of Virginia as Roxie Hart, Matt Krage of Virginia as Billy Flynn, Cathy Larson of Eveleth as Matron “Mama” Morton, Abigail Fink of Virginia as Mary Sunshine and Brad Kishel of Virginia as Amos Hart.

The ensemble of men includes Christian Van Orsdel of Eveleth, Steve Tedman of Palo, Pete Klabechek of Eveleth, Samuel Saari of Virginia, Baker Felix of Virginia, Alex Adams Ranta of Virginia and Nick Sullivan of Hibbing.

The ensemble of women includes Kasie Saumer of Virginia, Josie Grabowski of Virginia, Kristen Carlsen of Virginia, Josie Moe of Eveleth, Emily Rannikar of Virginia, Juliann Perala of Virginia, Ashley Koivunen of Eveleth and Briona Currie of Gilbert.

The chorus and dancers includes Jose Baltazar of Biwabik, Lucas King of Virginia, Ben Harvey of Virginia, Megan Wallis of Chisholm, Kathryn Ostman of Virginia, Megan Vidas of Eveleth, Liz Porkkonen of Eveleth and Lauren Seaman of Virginia.
