Joseph W. Merhar, 75, of Nashwauk, died Friday, May 3, 2019 at this home surrounded by family.
He was born on July 21, 1943 to John and Olanda (Gontero) Merhar in Grand Rapids. He attended school at Greenway. Joseph enlisted into the US Army serving from 1962-1964. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Lindquist in 1966. The couple made their home in Gilbert for 30 years until his retirement from LTV Steel after 33 years of service. The couple then moved to Nashwauk and spent much of their time at their cabin in Togo.
Joseph enjoyed hunting, fishing, four wheeling, and sitting around the campfire frying fish. He was an avid craftsman, having made decoys, canes and many other wooden crafts. Joseph took the greatest pleasure in spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife of 53 years: Lorraine; one daughter, Traci (Bill) Addy of Gilbert; one son, Jason (Monica) Merhar of Mt. Iron; four grandchildren: Curtis Robertson of Plymouth, WI, Brennon Addy of Superior, WI, Joey Addy of Gilbert and Noelle Merhar of Mt. Iron; siblings: John Merhar of Nashwauk, Mitzi Zappala of Garland, TX, Judy (Al) Worrath of Grand Rapids, and June (Greg) Holmes of Santa Anna, CA; as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Olanda Merhar; a sister, Patricia Shogren; and his father and mother in-law, Julius and Mary Lindquist.
Per Joe’s request, he bequested his body to science and requested that no services he held. A private family gathering will be held at a later date. Joe’s family wishes to thank the medical staff at Fairview Oncology and Infusion and Fairview Hospice for the special care given to Joe and his family during his illness.
