William R. “Winkie” Ryan, 88, of Virginia passed away Friday, February 1, 2019 at St. Raphael’s Health and Rehabilitation in Eveleth.

He was born on May 25, 1930 in Eveleth to William R. and Mary (Korelz) Ryan, Sr. and was a 1948 graduate of the Eveleth High School, and was a combat veteran of the Marine Corp during the Korean War.

Winkie was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church; American Legion Post 239 and Crellin-Tini VFW Post 1113, all of Virginia. He retired after 39 years of service working for Mattanna Mining and National Steel.

Winkie is survived by his brother Donald Ryan of Faribault, MN and his partner and love of his life Betty Plattner; and his honorary children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Winkie was a very loving, gentle and kind man. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by family and friends.


Please no flowers due to a family allergies. Mass of Christian burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, February 8, 2019 at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Virginia with Rev. Fr. Brandon Moravitz as celebrant. Visitation will be for one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be in the Eveleth Cemetery. Arrangements are with the Landmark Funeral Home in Virginia.
