RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Mesabi Range volleyball has had an impressive 2019 season so far and it is only looking up heading into this weekend.
The playoff brackets for the Section 7A volleyball tournament have been released with many area teams set to host playoff matchups on Monday and Wednesday.
TWO HARBORS — The North vs. South girls’ swim meet saw records being broken as Mesabi East, aided by Two Harbors and Eveleth-Gilbert to form the North squad, dominated the South, 1326-952.
MOUNTAIN IRON — After nearly a two-week break due to a Floodwood forfeit, Mountain Iron-Buhl head coach Dan Zubich was a little concerned heading into Wednesday’s game against Isle.
SARTELL, Minn. — Four Virginia Blue Devils and one Eveleth-Gilbert Golden Bear will make an appearance at next week’s Class A State Tennis Tournament following an impressive day at the Section 7A championships in Sartell.
CHERRY — In a volleyball match between two teams who look like they are ready for the playoffs to start, the Cherry Tigers beat Mesabi East, 3-0, 25-23, 25-21 and 25-16 to complete the sweep.
HOYT LAKES — Ava Hill and Geno Uhrbom won their respective girls’ and boys’ Iron Range Conference Championships Tuesday and also helped lead their teams to the top.

VIRGINIA — Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin racked up 427 yards of total offense and stifled the Virginia offense to spoil the Blue Devils’ Homecoming game, 40-0, on a cold, blustery night at Ewens Field.
MOUNTAIN IRON — On senior night at the Mountain Iron-Buhl gymnasium, the Ranger volleyball team came to play and put together a strong showing in their regular season finale, defeating Littlefork-Big Falls 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-18).
CHERRY — Last week, the Cherry High School football team ran into a more physical, bigger and stronger South Ridge team, and it showed on the scoreboard as the Panthers won 28-0.
CHISHOLM — After a two-week hiatus, the Chisholm High School football team finally returns to the field today when the Bluestreaks travel to Deer River to take on the Warriors in a 7 p.m. contest.
INTERNATIONAL FALLS — The top finishers at Tuesday’s 2019 Hial Pike Cross Country Meet were almost exclusively Iron Range names with Ely, Mountain Iron-Buhl, Eveleth-Gilbert and Mesabi East all having strong finishes as the section meet draws closer.
VIRGINIA — The Iron Range will be well represented next week at the Section 7A Individual Tennis Tournament with both Virginia and Eveleth-Gilbert each sending a singles player and a pair of doubles teams down to the Sta Fit Fitness Center in Sartell.

AURORA — The Mesabi East girls’ swim team passed the Duck Trophy to Duluth East Saturday as the Greyhounds came out on top of the Taconite Invite after scoring 315 points on the day.
