McCarthy state bound

Virginia Area's Jacob McCarthy rounds a gate during his first run in Tuesday's Section 7A Alpine meet at Giants Ridge.

BIWABIK — After a solid day on the hill, the Virginia Area Alpine Ski Team came away with its first state qualifier since 2014.

Jacob McCarthy took that honor after finishing in 15th place overall in the boys’ event with a two-run combined time of 1:22.76.

“We’re pretty proud of how Jake skied,’’ head coach Benji Neff said after the VAAST skier recorded runs of 40.43 seconds and 42.33 seconds. “He skied two smart runs. Jake has had a really great season and skied pretty smart today.’’

McCarthy had to sweat it out a little bit with 18th place finishes in both runs, which was very near the cutoff line for making it to the State Meet. About two hours later at the awards ceremony, he found his combined time moved him up to 15th, which was the second to last position to advance.

The top two teams and top 10 individuals not on those teams advance to state. The boys’ team finished in 11th place and the girls’ team came home 16th.

Andrew Deppe finished 26th (1:26.80) individually and was second on the team. His time of 43.03 on the first run had him in 39th place, while his time of 43.77 on the second run was good enough for 26th place. When the times were combined, he moved up to 26th.

Neff was extremely pleased with the way Deppe went out. “It was fun to watch for all of us as coaches.’’

On the girls’ side, VAAST was paced by eighth-grader Mia Schuchard, who finished in 44th position after runs of 51.21 and then 48.09.

“She’s had just a fantastic season,’’ according to Neff, who said she has really stepped up and worked hard as an eighth-grader. Tuesday was just one example of that. “She had a really good day.’’

Teammate Emma Crum was about 1 second back in 51st place with a combined time of 1:40.31 (48.95, 51.26).

Neff said Crum just began racing last year and “she’s done very well’’ in her second year racing. Other girls that scored for VAAST were Arija Thompsa in 73rd with a time of 1:48.59 (52.75, 55.84) and Azalea Ray in 111th with a mark of 2:24.04 (53.44, 1:30.60).

The boys’ team, meanwhile, also got points from Chris Jacklen in 72nd place (42.59, 56.82, 1:39.41) and Marco Pazzelli in 74th (48.67, 50.84, 1:39.51).

Stillwater won the boys competition with 478 points and Duluth East took the runner-up spot with 436 points.

In the girls’ event, Stillwater again took the title with 457 points and Cook County/Silver Bay grabbed second at 418.

The State Meet is set for 10 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, at Giants Ridge.
