Trucano, Johnson earn top weight lifter awards at Oie Memorial

Twenty-four power lifters participated in the 9th Annual Gordy Oie Memorial Raw Bench Press Competition on Saturday. Virginians Chelsea Trucano and Blake Johnson won best lifter awards.

VIRGINIA — The 9th Annual Gordy Oie Memorial Raw Bench Press Competition was held on Saturday, Oct. 26, at the Mesabi Community College.

Twenty-four lifters from across the Range, plus some from Hermantown, Duluth, Lino Lakes, Esko and Edina, also participated. The lifters were of all ages (12-68) and levels of experience — first time competitors to state and American record holders.

Scott Braizrer was this year’s participant of the Gordy OIe Memorial award, which is presented by his family to someone who has continued Oie’s dedication to helping others in the sport of weightlifting.

Awards for best lifter went to: Female, Chelsea Trucano; and male, Blake Johnson.

The event was sponsored by: Supreme Court Fitness and Racquetball, Mesabi Range College, Cliffs Natural Resources, Minnesota Ore Operations, USX Corp, Dave Paolo, Scott Braizer, Ferguson, Praxair, Mesabi Dental Service, Johnson Dairy, Body By Michelle, Aaah Massage, and Northland Chiropractic.

The next event will be the Schaefbauer Memorial Bench Press Championships on May 3, 2014.
