Jackets oust Bears

VIRGINIA — In the second Section 7A semifinal tennis match on Saturday, No. 1 seeded Hibbing took on No. 4 seeded Eveleth-Gilbert, with the winning team facing Virginia in the title match.

In a match that went both ways, the Bluejackets picked up three wins in singles and a win in doubles to beat the Golden Bears 4-3, to advance to the title match.

“This was another match that could have gone either way,” Golden Bears coach Dean Edstrom said. “My guys really showed up to play today and I am very proud of them.”

Hibbing won at No. 1 singles with Carter Anderson beating Rob Licari, 6-1 6-1.

Ryan Osborne gave the Bluejackets a 2-0 lead when he beat Noah Sandnas, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0, in a match that went both ways.

“That was a great match,” Edstrom said. “Both players were leaving it all on the court.”

The Golden Bears picked up a win at No. 3 Singles when Jared Delich shook off a rough first set, losing 2-6, but came back and won sets two and three, 6-4 and 6-2, over Dom Warzecha.

“He shook off that first set and came back nice,” Edstrom said. “That was another great match to watch.”

Hibbing got a win at No. 4 singles from Nic Cicchi. He beat Bryce Vest, 6-3 and 7-5.

The Golden Bears won at No. 1 doubles with Gavin Maki and Nick Beaudette beating Joe Dwyer and Mark Borland, 6-4 and 7-6.

The Bluejackets picked up a win at No. 2 doubles from Jack Gryzbowski and Isaac Hildebrand, beating Colde Anderson and Nathan Tassoni, 6-1 and 6-4.

The Golden Bears won at No. 3 doubles when Blayne Mortenson and Jake Bradach beat Luke Lundell and Kaleb Stoffel, 6-4, 7-6.

“We showed some mental toughness out there today,” Edstrom said. “I could not be any prouder of these guys. We had a great season and they put in the hard work.”
