Mesabi East dunks Golden Bears, 102-81

AURORA — The Mesabi East swim team picked up a 102-81 win over area rival Eveleth-Gilbert Tuesday at the Mesabi East High School.

The Giants won just four of the meet’s 12 events, but finished with plenty more second and third place finishes to grab the win.

Lydia Skelton was a winner for Mesabi East in the 200 individual medley, coming first with a time of 2:25.60. The Giants also won in diving thanks to Kailey Fossell leading with 239.45 points. Teammates Kiarra Moehlenbrock and Zariah Baker finished second and third in the event.

Grace Brunfelt was the last individual winner for Mesabi East, taking home gold in the 100 backstroke. Brunfelt’s time of 1:07.95 was just under a second faster than teammate Emma Williams in second (1:08.79).

Mesabi East also had one relay win with the team of Skelton, Megan Williams, Kylie Meyer and Hannah Nygaard coming together in the 200 medley relay. The quartet stopped the clock at 1:55.78, nearly 20 seconds ahead of their closest competition.

The Golden Bears picked up six individual wins and two relay wins in the loss.

Mollie Albrecht was a double winner for E-G with wins in both the 200 freestyle (2:05.12) and the 100 freestyle (55.54). Elli Jankila also scored two wins, claiming first in the 50 freestyle (25.99) and the 500 freestyle (6:01.57).

Eveleth-Gilbert’s last two individual wins came from Carly George in the 100 butterfly (1:03.66) and Anna Heinonen in the 100 breaststroke (1:24.06).

George, Jankila, Albrecht and teammate Amara Carey held strong in the 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays, winning both with time of 1:46.99 and 3:52.07, respectively.

Both teams will be in action on Thursday with the Golden Bears hosting a quadrangular and Mesabi East hosting International Falls. Both are set to start at 4:30 p.m.
