EVELETH — The Virginia American Legion team picked up a 6-1 win Friday against area rival Eveleth-Gilbert.
Post 239 got a strong pitching performance from Jack Perala, with Perala throwing a complete game, giving up one run on three hits while striking out 14.
Eveleth-Gilbert pitcher Brandon Lind started for Post 138 and gave up one run on three hits over four innings of work. He struck out two in the process.
Eveleth-Gilbert got to the early lead with a run in the first inning courtesy of Zach Lindseth and Kyle Peterson. Lindseth reached on a single and was driven home later in the inning by Peterson’s RBI triple.
Virginia tied things up in the fourth with the inning being led off by a Carter Thome triple. A single from Perala to follow drove Thome home, making it 1-1.
Post 239 capitalized on a new pitcher in the fifth inning and etched their last five runs to take a commanding lead they wouldn’t surrender. The inning’s offense was highlighted by a triple from Austin Harvey and an RBI single from Nick Peters.
Eveleth-Gilbert will host Grand Marais on Monday. Virginia is set to host Taconite on Tuesday.
