ST. PAUL — The Ely track and field team as well as the track and field team from the combined St. Louis County schools of South Ridge, Cherry, North Woods and Northeast Range are sending athletes to the State Track and Field Championships today and tomorrow at St. Paul’s Hamline University.

Below is a look at their representatives as well as their seed times.


Leading the pack for Ely’s state qualifiers is junior Luke Olson. Olson will be participating in the 800 meter run and is a part of both of Ely’s two qualifying relays — the 4x400 and the 4x800. In the 800 meter run, Olson has the top time heading into the state meet and is seeded first at 1:57.76.

Teammate Raif Olson will look to impress in the 300 meter hurdles. Olson finished as runner-up at the 7A championships and heads into the 300 meter hurdles seeded 16th with a time of 43.44.

Both Luke and Raif Olson will be joined by Nate Nettifee and Emmett Faltesek in the 4x400 meter relay. The Timberwolves are seeded 15th in the event with a time of 3:34.24. Luke Olson and Faltesek will join Dylan Fenske and James Schwinghamer in the 4x800 meter relay. Ely enters the 4x800 seeded 16th with a time of 8:28.01.

Ely will be sending two representatives in the field events with junior Eric Omerza competing in the triple jump and junior Brielle Kallberg competing in the long jump. Omerza is seeded 15th in the triple jump with a best mark of 41 feet, 10 inches. Kallberg is seeded 19th in the long jump with a mark of 16 feet, one and a half inches.

South Ridge/Cherry/North Woods/Northeast Range

The Panthers girls’ track team will be sending one relay team and one thrower to this year’s state meeet.

Sophomore Elle Ridge will make her mark in the discus throw this weekend. Ridge finished second at the 7A championships and is seeded 15th heading into state with a top throw of 107 feet, one inch.

Mikayla Mellesmoen, Jaden Ellefson, Sophie Lenz and Taylor Mejdrich will make up the Panthers’ 4x200 meter relay team. The quartet enters the state meet seeded 16th with a time of 1:50.21.


The Class A State Track and Field Meet prelims begin today at 3:30 p.m. Finals are set for Saturday, also starting at 3:30 p.m.
