Winner parity continues in Hibbing for third straight week

HIBBING — With summer now setting in, Hibbing Raceway continued rolling for the third straight weekend of racing on Iron Mining Association of Minnesota Night. For the third straight week, six new winners found their way to victory lane by the end of the evening. With the domination in certain classes in recent years, to see different winners in 3 consecutive weeks is a rare treat for long-time race fans.

Following the bicycle races at intermission, the WISSOTA Midwest Modifieds started off the feature racing action. Cole Chernosky and Michael Blevins took turns leading in the early stages of the race before giving way to last year’s Track Champion; Skeeter Estey of Kelly Lake. Estey took the top spot from Blevins on lap 7 and led the rest of the way for the win. In a caution free WISSOTA Super Stock feature, Don Smith of Cohasset took the lead from Doug Koski early in the race and then held off a late challenge from Kevin Burdick to take the victory. Although winning in other classes in the past; including most recently in a Midwest Modified, Smith noted in victory lane that it was his first Super Stock feature win at Hibbing in 30 years of racing.

After watching Jeffey Wood and Duane Dale run up front at the onset of the WISSOTA Modified feature, Kelly Estey of Kelly Lake emulated his son Skeeter from earlier in the evening by bypassing both front runners following a lap 7 restart. Estey cruised to a large advantage after that and was never challenged for the win. The WISSOTA Late Model feature turned out to be one of the more competitive races of the evening. Kyle Peterlin set a rapid pace at the beginning and bult up a large lead over George Ledin only to see it erased with a caution. After the restart, Peterlin couldn’t find the same the rhythm and Jeffery Massingill of Nashwauk pounced the opportunity. Massingill used the bottom of the track to roll past Peterlin after the midway point and would never relinquish his lead to the checkered flag.

Michael Roth of Deerwood finally closed the deal in the WISSOTA Pure Stocks after two weeks of running towards the front of the pack. Roth made the winning pass on leader Austin Carlson and stretched his lead over the duration of the race. The Hornets put a cap on the evening just before 10 p.m. once again and it was a new face in victory lane once again. Anthony Kangas of McGregor forged ahead at the drop of the green and would lead from start to finish for his first win.

After being postponed for inclement weather last Tuesday, the first Carquest Enduro of the year is set to take place this evening. The action gets underway at 7:00. Then regular racing in Hibbing continues Saturday, June 15, and will be presented by Fortune Bay Resort and Casino. All six classes will be in competition once again with Kid’s Box Races at intermission. For more information, visit or call (218) 262-2324
